Week 2 - 12/16/2018

The second week with the Sweethearts Litter was filled with milestones. The puppies nearly tripled their birth weights, opened their eyes and started “walking.” We use the quotation marks because it was more like staggering or limping around. It was funny to see that some of the pups would be off-balance leaning far forward and nearly pile-driving themselves into the carpet, while others were bottom/back-heavy at first. Eventually, they got the hang of walking, albeit still lopsided from side to side.

Vocalizations also started in earnest, with the pups’ “yips” and growls first coming spontaneously in their sleep, and then more deliberately in their waking hours. Still, it seemed like some of the pups were startled by the sound of their own voice.

The Sweethearts litter (as always in order of appearance):

Desert Sol Bec

Name Origin:

"kiss" Québécois

Sex:

Male

Weight:

3lb 13oz

About Bec:

Bec continues as the champion eater, easily outweighing his siblings by 5-6 ounces. He’s a gentle giant, though, with a sweet demeanor that invites you to just cuddle or snuggle with him. His favorite sleeping position involves having his chin and head supported, whether it’s cupped in your hand, atop a rail in the whelping box, or laid on top of Mama or a sibling’s head or leg. He’s fast asleep soon after settling in.

Desert Sol Baci

Name Origin:

"kiss" in Italian

Sex:

Male

Weight:

3lb 4oz

About Baci:

Baci was the first to explore around after opening his eyes, and to use his mouth as a secondary exploratory tool. He gently mouths everything he comes into contact with, so he might take after his mother if he graduates to licking with his Chinook tongue. He has also been the most playful, instigating head bumps with his siblings and the start of what might soon become full-blown wrestling matches. He has responded most casually to new stimulation like being placed on new surfaces or being held up perpendicular to the ground, relaxing fairly quickly to each new surface or position.

Desert Sol Dolce

Name Origin:

"sweet" Italian

Sex:

Female

Weight:

3lb 6oz

About Dolce:

Dolce continues her mild-mannered, sweet ways. She seems the most coordinated walker among the pups, but maybe because she takes it slowly and deliberately (as opposed to Baci, who pitches forward in his excitement to move around). She always seems to get buried by her siblings at the Milk Bar, but always comes out none the worse for the wear. She’s distinguishable by a small dark spot on the top of her face, and seems to have the darkest coloring on her back. Such a sweet, sweet girl!

Desert Sol Bisou

Name Origin:

"kiss" French

Sex:

Female

Weight:

3lb 6oz

About Bisou:

Bisou continues to be our spunkiest puppy, living up to the stereotype of youngest in the litter. She is the most vocal by far, always “talking” when she’s nursing, or whining as she searches or explores around the whelping box. She’s a great cuddler, though, once she settles down.
