The Northwest Forest Litter gave us an excellent excuse to take a vacation to the PNW for Jon and Kristy… PUPPIES! We figured we had lots of people to visit up here and we started the trip off with hanging out with the NW Forest pups and doing their puppy evaluations and choosing the final homes. It’s always magical to spend time with the entire litter at the same time as they run around and play by the trees that they were named after (fun fact: I believe Matt said that 7 of the 9 tree names that the pups are named after were in their backyard!). Although, Matt and Chelsi, who did an amazing job raising these puppies, did not think it was as magical as us as they chase after 9 puppies going in 9 different directions under several trees and bushes! :D

All pups have such amazing temperaments and were well socialized. We were able to snuggle up and play with them and they were all happy to meet us new people. We also got to spend some time “officially” (vs. online) meeting Ginger from Rain Mountain Chinooks and Susan from Frontier Chinooks when they stopped by to do puppy temperament testing and chat with us. It’s always great meeting other breeders and hearing their stories and learning some things as well as hearing how well the pups are from their perspectives. As a bonus we also got to meet Shay, a pup Susan got from Granite Hill Chinooks in NH, and she’s a daughter from our own pup Luc. We also got to meet Alison, who was already out there enjoying a mini vacation prior to bringing her puppy home, which ended up being Spruce!

It was a great visit and we clearly could see the amazing job that Matt and Chelsi did. Having 9 puppies for your first time raising a litter is no easy feat! They, and momma Ava, enjoyed a well-deserved break after the pups went home.

The Northwest Forest litter (as always in order of appearance):

Desert Sol Zeus (fka Cedar)

chinook puppy

Sex:

Male

Call Name:

Zeus

Name Origin/Destination:

Zeus headed up to MT to live with Lisa and Fred. They were introduced to the breed by Zeus’ cousin Reggie from the Avatar litter and have already had a fun play date together! He was named Zeus because his family always had their past dogs have hero names from fiction or classics and this name fit the pup! This smart boy is has an excellent recall whenever he’s out with his mom and dad and loves ice cubes, bananas and any kind of cheese. He’s also always up for a game of tug if you pull out his big rope toy.

Desert Sol Tobias Theodore (fka Fir)

chinook puppy

Sex:

Male

Call Name:

Toby

Name Origin/Destination:

Toby is staying in WA and going home with Stephanie and Michael. The story of picking Toby’s name was serendipity. Shortly before Toby came home, Michael’s dad asked if they picked out a name yet and they said no. Michael told Stephanie to make something up and Tobias was the first thing she said. The name stuck and they picked Theodore as his middle name since it sounded nice together. Stephanie is a dog trainer at The Notre Dog Academy so you can see cute photos of him on their Facebook page. Toby will live with another older dog and a few rats and several chickens. He’s being a good boy with all his furry and feathered buddies.

Desert Sol Winston (fka Larch)

chinook puppy

Sex:

Male

Call Name:

Winston

Name Origin/Destination:

Winston was named after two other Winston’s; Winston Churchill, the charismatic and tough British leader during WWII and Winston Bishop, the funny, lovable, and fiercely loyal character on the TV show New Girl. Winston’s dad, Tyler, hopes he brings out all of these qualities as he grows. Even though Winston lives in VA, his dad has family in NH and frequently travels up there to visit them. Fortunately he also has his brother Levi in MA that they frequently get together and play, and boy do those two boys play hard with each other.

Desert Sol Pachamama (fka Ash)

chinook puppy

Sex:

Female

Call Name:

Pacha

Name Origin/Destination:

Pacha is heading to PA to live with Jean and Ken. Her name Pacha comes from the Peruvian Indians (land/place) with the full word of Pachamama (Mother Earth). She’ll be spending her days with her kitty friend and time with mom in the yard doing yardwork and hopefully learning to pull a cart to help out. Pacha recently went to the Chinook Statue unveiling in Tamworth NH and got to meet her brothers Levi and Winston and Uncle Pops while she was there!

Desert Sol Jeanius Loci (fka Spruce)

chinook puppy

Sex:

Male

Call Name:

Levi

Name Origin/Destination:

Levi went out east to live with his mom Alison and another dog in MA. Since he was the pup with the blue collar, it got his mom thinking of blue things; collar… denim… Americana… Levi’s! Levi also means “attached” and she could tell right away it was fitting name for him. Jeanius Loci is a play on genius loci, the “spirit of a place”. Levi gets frequent play dates with his brother Winston when he’s up visiting NH and also got to meet sister Pacha, at the Chinook Statue unveiling in Tamworth. He also got to meet Uncle Pops a few times before she moved from NH to MA which he was thrilled to meet!

Desert Sol Tawny Tolay (fka Juniper)

chinook puppy

Sex:

Female

Call Name:

Tawny

Name Origin/Destination:

Tawny will be heading to CA with Patrick and Liz, and their Chinook, Linden. It was a little fortuitous that they ended up with a Northwest Forest litter as Linden is also a type of tree, linking her to her new sister. Tolay is an area near their home recognized by Native Americans as being a spiritual center for the local tribes. Tawny was chosen as the classic color of the Chinook breed. Patrick heads to MT yearly for a month long hike and camping trip and Tawny was able to go on her first one when she was about 6 months old. She was a great traveler in the car and did very well exploring and staying close by when they were hiking and backpacking.

Desert Sol Abrielle Rain (fka Pine)

chinook puppy

Sex:

Female

Call Name:

Abbey

Name Origin/Destination:

Abbey will be going home with Robin and John and her doggie daddy, Pippin in WA! She sure loves playing with her dad and is fond of “sharing” her toys with him; a stick, the squeaky squirrel toy, dog bed. She’s also an avid ear cleaner so Pippin won’t have dirty ears with her around. It will be super fun for Robin and John to watch them grow up together.

Desert Sol Pete (fka Hemlock)

chinook puppy

Sex:

Male

Call Name:

Pete

Name Origin/Destination:

Petey went home to CO with Erin and Steven and their children. They named him Purdue Pete because they both went to college at Purdue University and that was their mascot. Both of their prior dogs also had Purdue names so Pete had to follow the pattern. They’re hoping he loves watching Purdue basketball as much as they do.

Desert Sol Willow (fka Alder)

chinook puppy

Sex:

Female

Call Name:

Willow

Name Origin:

Willow will also remain in WA and live with Karla. She lives nextdoor to her daughter and her family so Willow will have plenty of grandkids around to play with and love on her. Although Karla’s daughter said that she should have named her pup “Noodle” since she moves her whole body most of the time! Happy puppy wiggles!
