This was a hard litter to send home! These 9 puppies were so much fun and had such awesome personalities. It was also a more interesting litter since they were a cross litter and it was fun seeing how much Chinook or Bernese Mountain Dog traits they got and how they turned out looks and personality wise. And of course having the litter theme of my favorite book series of all time, Throne of Glass, made it that much more fun to talk about the pups and see what personality traits matched the characters from the book! I’m super happy that we get to keep a puppy from this litter to keep the fun memories going.
These pups made having 9 puppies look pretty easy. We didn’t have the big send off at the 8 week mark since it was right before Christmas (there were only 3 that day), so we had a slow send off over the next two weeks with each puppy going home a different day. It was fun spending more one on one time with each puppy and his or her new family, and being the holidays meant we could have that time off from work to enjoy it more. The weather was gorgeous as well so we got to take many walks with the pups and their families to the park.
Since this litter is benefiting two cross breeding programs, we had the arduous task of finding breed potential homes for all of them, and thankfully, we did. We also were very fortunate we got to spread them out across the country, east coast and west, northwest and northeast, and some in between! Several of these Nook/BMD crosses got to enjoy lots of snow already! Sorry to the southern pups that only get to play in sunshine. :)
Don’t forget to “Like” our Desert Sol Chinooks Facebook page, so you can see the pictures we share from this litter as they grow, especially our own little Aelin! (Kristy is doing a happy dance she finally got a black and tan pup!) We couldn’t be happier with our puppy homes and we hope to one day get to visit them in our travels (or their travels if it takes them through AZ). We hope these special pups make a positive impact on their families and the BMD and Chinook breeds. As Aelin Fireheart frequently says in the books, “Let’s Rattle the Stars!”
The Throne of Glass litter (as always in order of appearance):
Call Name:
PopsSex:
MaleWeight:
13lb 11ozDestination:
Pops is named after his new mom’s grandfather. The grandfather’s nickname is Pops. He is now living in the homeland of Chinook himself up in New Hampshire. Pops is enjoying romps in the snow with his dog pal Rosie and human mom.Call Name:
GretaSex:
FemaleWeight:
13lb 11ozDestination:
Greta’s name came about because her new moms wanted a Swiss mountain girl type of a name. They decided to keep the litter name of Nesryn in her full name as well since they love the story behind her and ahave read the Throne of Glass series and loved it! (Great praise coming from a Librarian too!) Greta is living in upstate New York and will travel to Maine for vacations so hopefully she can meet up with sister Freya at times.Call Name:
BrunoSex:
MaleWeight:
15lb 13ozDestination:
Bruno was the last pup to go home and boy was he the biggest! He did manage to squeeze into his Sherpa bag for the short flight to the Dallas, Texas area when his human dad came to pick him up. Aelin missed him a ton since they were together the longest. Bruno’s name was chosen since the family wanted an Italian name to go along with new human mom’s roots. He also lives at home with two girls and a boy to play with.Call Name:
KeelieSex:
FemaleWeight:
13lb 13ozDestination:
Keelie is joining her “sister” Myka from the Sweetheart litter in Tennessee (they’re technically cousins but now that they’re living together, they’re officially sisters now) and two kitty friends. Keelie’s name comes from the Throne of Glass series, which made us super excited to hear. Both human parents are reading the series and they chose the name Keelie, who is a Wyvern, for her loyalty, bravery and has unconditional love to her rider.Call Name:
AelinSex:
FemaleWeight:
13lb 11ozDestination:
Aelin is the lucky puppy that will be staying here with her Desert Sol pack in AZ! She loves running in the park with her mom Zazu but has a special bond with grandma Kyra. They sleep and play hard together. Aelin tries to wiggle up to our cat Spyro to become friends, but so far, he’s having none of it. We chose Aelin’s name since she is one of the main characters of the Throne of Glass series that both Jon and Kristy have read. Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, lost Queen of Terrasen and the last surviving member of the Galathynius line. We chose her because we liked her moral compass, devotion to her friends and country, as well as her strength and determination to do what is right. Aelin’s nickname is “Fireheart” so we added it to her name and will enjoy using it with fondness. Her other nickname in the book is “Fire Breathing Bitch Queen,” which I’m sure will come up from time to time when Aelin is full of puppy mischievousness!Call Name:
AvaSex:
FemaleWeight:
13lb 4ozDestination:
Avalanche, or Ava for short, is going up to Washington State with her new human dad and mom. She will also have a dog friend to get into trouble with named Hutchy. They chose the name Avalanche because it ties into the heritage of both breeds as well as her new dad is a fan of racing and high performance cars and owns an Avalanche Grey Shelby GT350. Ava will be spending lots of time in the garage "helping" fix up cars.Call Name:
DarwinSex:
MaleWeight:
13lb 13ozDestination:
Darwin is named after Charles Darwin himself. They especially liked that Darwin’s Origin of Species (which studies finches and how evolution works) and felt it was fitting since the Bernese Vitality Project and the Chinook Breed Conservation Program are trying to better the genetic diversity in each breed. Darwin will be going up to enjoy snowy Minnesota with his new human mom and dad. He gets to spend time with mom at work helping the elderly she’s taking care of. He also has two kitty friends that he’s starting to get to snuggle with now, Aelin will be jealous.Call Name:
SummitSex:
MaleWeight:
14lb 6ozDestination:
Summit is heading over to southern CA with his new human mom. Her family loves the outdoors and being in nature and felt the name Summit will be fitting for a dog. They hope to have many adventures and explorations with him. He shares his home with a dog-named Aspen, so they both have fitting outdoorsy names.Call Name:
FreyaSex:
FemaleWeight:
13lb 10ozDestination:
Freya is journeying to Maine with her mom and dad and their girl and boy she can go on adventures with. Freya Lumi stands for “Lady of the Snow or Light of Life”. In Norse mythology, Freya is the powerful goddess of love/fertility, but the name also means “Lady” which ties in nicely with their cat's name Lady Clementine. Freya also travels in a chariot pulled by cats! I’m sure Clem wants no part of that! Lumi is the Finnish name for “snow” and Latin word for “light” which also ties in nicely with Freya’s heritage.of
