Birth

Week 1

Week 1 - 1/28/2024

Oh my how did week 1 go by already?!? It's been a busy and emotional week (see birth week for the update) so it was crazy to wake up today and realize our little benders are already one week old! Aelin has been the super mom we were hoping she'd be. We never have to "save" a puppy from being stepped or sat on, and she's feeding and cleaning them like a pro, just as her mama Zazu did. Zazu will also pop in from time to time to help clean them which is nice she's returning the favor on the help Aelin gave her with the Kitty Litter. Aelin is already taking breaks outside the whelping box and keeping a keen eye on when we pick her puppies up for a snuggle, making sure they are promptly returned to her. We did their week one evaluations today and I'm still in disbelief that they really didn't give a peep or a struggle while doing them! (Breeders will understand the shock that this task is when it goes smooth and no struggling! I'm sure it will be a different story for week 7 evaluations though... haha!) Aang did whine a bit, but to be fair, I did pull him off the milk bar when it was his turn. We were able to give 7 puppies their evaluations and take the week one photos in less than 2 hours!!! This litter all looked really good for the prelim evaluations and we'll be excited to see how they turn out.

When the pups were 4 days old we started their puppy stimulation exercises which helps the puppies become better well-adjusted dogs that may be more resistant to cancers and disease, become more stable, exploratory and learn faster. These small stressors on the pups help stimulate the electrical activity in their brains. The exercises have us hold them in different positions, like laying on their backs (which is super cute), and putting them on a cold, damp cloth and tickling their toes with a q-tip. They will go through these exercises for a week and a half and then will have different things to desensitize and socialize them as they age. I wonder how "stressed" we are making them since half the time they just sleep while you are cradling them on their backs!

My favorite thing about this age is the nightly puppy snuggling! While we watch TV in the evening, Jon and I will have a puppy to snuggle with in our arms until they get antsy, then we swap them out for another. It's a good age to have the puppy just lay there with you without the need for exploring and moving around. Some nights the pup has been so calm and relaxed, we didn't have to swap them, we just did so we can snuggle another one! I cannot believe how calm and quiet this litter seems to be, so far. Also, we want to give my mom a shout out for being a wonderful puppy helper the first week, helping taking the early morning shift so we can do our 24-hour puppy watch. Puppy snuggles are an excellent job perk! ;o)
