Week 8 - 3/17/2024

It’s always harder to write up week 8 because there is so much going on with the puppies going home and this time with us keeping a pup, then we have the busy time of getting her used to her new schedule and training her as well, so I have to delve back into my memories to try to wrap up this week. This time around we had them go home slowly, two right away, two a week later and two a week after that! It seemed a lot of vacations were going on at this time which pushed out some puppy pick up dates. This litter was a pretty good litter overall, so it wasn’t so bad keeping them for a little while longer, the only downside as we watched them grow and so we hoped they’d fit in their Sherpa carriers to fly home!

So big news, we actually kept a puppy from this litter - Katara!!! We have a steadfast rule to only keep a pup from the second litter so we don’t have too many dogs at once, but Katara’s personality was absolutely amazing (it was very hard to pick between both her and Momo actually, both girls have excellent personalities and have great bone and structure). To be fair, even though this is Aelin’s first litter, she is older than Zazu and Kyra were for their first so it kind of puts us to only a little earlier age wise (see I will justify this any way I can – LOL). And no, when it does come to Aelin’s second litter, we will NOT be keeping a pup! Four dogs is already too many in our household. Just ask the cat! ;o)

We usually have a hard time getting pups to the east coast and this time we got to send four out that way! We also added four new states to the map of Desert Sol pups (NM, AL, PA, and NJ). One pup, Zuko, got to go home to a Desert Sol pup family and we kept one, but the other five were brand new families to the Chinook world! We love expanding the Chinook community with new Chinook lovers!

The updates from the pup’s new families have made us smile. They are all doing so well and are getting to have so many new experiences. Two of the pups (Iroh and Katara) were "melters" just like their mama Aelin, and are still doing it to this day! Katara may have the melter gene, but not the comfy butt gene Aelin has! :) LOL We had a lot of fun with the theme and these colorful, smart and fun pups.

P.S. I also left an Easter egg in the week 8 posed photos below that ties back to a prior week’s update. Let’s see who catches it, you will earn the bragging rights if you do!

The Avatar litter (as always in order of appearance):

Desert Sol Spirit of the Moon

Call Name:

Katara

Sex:

Female

Weight:

17lb 10oz

Destination:

Katara is the lucky pup who gets to stay here in AZ with the Desert Sol pack and her mama Aelin! Her personality really won us over, and add that to an amazing structure and adorable dog, we couldn’t help but keep her. Plus, the gray and tan helps round out our colorful Chinook home. :) We chose her registered name to be “Spirit of the Moon” since the water benders in Avatar use the power of the moon and ocean to bend. Their strength comes from the “Spirit of the Moon” and their life comes from the “Spirit of the Ocean”.

Desert Sol Dez (formerly "Zuko")

Call Name:

Dez

Sex:

Male

Weight:

17lb 5oz

Destination:

Dez went to OR to live with is half Uncle Maz (from the Kitty Litter), human mom and dad, Neda and Andy, and their three teen children. From day one, Neda saw his photo on Facebook and emailed us about their interest in him which was super sweet! He’s going to have so much fun on hikes, beaches and playing in the mountains up in OR with Maz. They named him Dez as it’s a derivative of Deschutes which is the main river in their town. Also, it’s another nod to a Star Wars character, Des, who later became Darth Bane (and Maz of course is also from Star Wars).

Desert Sol Makani Kai (formerly "Aang")

Call Name:

Kai

Sex:

Male

Weight:

18lb 11oz

Destination:

Kai went to NJ to live with Tara and Barb and their two teenage sons. Tara and Barb have had many dogs over the years, but the most recent ones have been Great Danes! When looking for their next dog, Barb requested it be a little smaller than a Dane and so the search began and Tara came across Chinooks! Tara owns her own certified dog training company, The Liberated Pup, and wanted a calm “teacher puppy” to help other puppies and dogs in her class have a nice, calm dog to make them feel more comfortable and come out of their shells better. We felt that Kai’s personality was perfect for this job! Kai’s full name is based on the four elements: Earth, Fire, Air and Water (fitting for our Avatar theme). Desert (Earth) Sol (Fire-sun) Makanai (Air-Hawaiian for wind) Kai (Water-Hawaiian for sea). Kai represents water and means “sea” in Hawaiian (one of his guardian’s birthplace) and aligns with this sweet pup born an Aquarius (water-bearer) and with his new home base at the Jersey Shore.

Desert Sol Rise from Fire (formerly "Iroh")

Call Name:

Henry

Sex:

Male

Weight:

19lb 2oz

Destination:

Henry went to go live with Katy and her other dog and two cats up in WI. She wanted a calm and focused pup that likes to be active, play in snow and is gentle with animals. “Iroh” fits those requirements very well with his personality as he was always up to play and explore but wasn’t over the top excitable and is a very smart and sweet boy. He also was a “melter” just like his mom Aelin, which he still does to this day. Katy chose the name “Rise from Fire” as a nod to both his birthplace in Phoenix, AZ (the Phoenix is a bird that is reborn from the ashes of a fire) and his namesake character, Iroh, is a fire bender in our Avatar litter theme. She chose Henry as his call name as she likes classic male names.

Desert Sol Bringer of Light (formerly "Sokka")

Call Name:

Luca

Sex:

Male

Weight:

19lb 2oz

Destination:

Luca is going to AL with Tim and Ali and their 3 children, with a possibility of moving to New England in a few years. Tim wanted a dog that would enjoy roller blading with him and Luca already is getting the hang of it! He loves playing with their young son in the backyard too. Luca is Italian for “bringer of light” and they felt that Luca would be able to shine his light on their family as they go through some hard times. His amber coat also represented the sun, light and warmth for them. The night that Tim visited us before flying home with Luca the next morning, there was a very bright light arching across the sky! It was incredible to see and we thought it was a good omen for the little pup's name origin! We later found out it was the Space X satellite launch, but to be in the backyard at the right time and seeing that for the first time in our lives while playing with the pups outside, was pretty special.

Desert Sol Dreaming Neon Black (formerly "Bumi")

Call Name:

Cosmo

Sex:

Male

Weight:

18lb 11oz

Destination:

Cosmo is going to NM with Kerry and Bertin and their young son. They all came out to visit Cosmo and the pups a few weeks before he went home since they were out in AZ for a car auction. Their son enjoyed playing with Cosmo and the large “fishing rod” toy so they were sure to buy him one of his own. Kerry and their son wanted to name him Cosmo because they love stargazing, space and stars, so they let Bertin pick his registered name. Dreaming Neon Black is the name of an album of one of his favorite bands, Nevermore.

Desert Sol Malka Estie (formerly "Momo")

Call Name:

Malka

Sex:

Female

Weight:

17lb 10oz

Destination:

Malka will be living in PA with Fern and Mickey and their two kids. Fern has been following Chinooks as she first got introduced to the breed through the BMD Vitality group that we are a part of when we had Aelin’s litter. She has another rare breed dog, Appenzeller Sennenhund named Axel, that she does a lot of fun dog sports with like Rally and Nosework and will love to find fun dog sports to do with Malka too! Fern immediately fell in love with the weekly updates of Malka and her “kissy” personality! She continues to spread her love out there in PA with her family and to others wherever they go!
