With the pairing of Kyra (52 pounds, 22 inches) and Oscar (73 pounds, 24 inches) we predicted we'd see tawny, reddish-gold, and black & tan coats and some pups with and without black muzzles. Our predictions were right! :) Pups more than likely will be about average in size for the breed. Kyra has a thick, soft tawny double coat, nice head, great front angulation and believes every human was created to love her. Oscar has an equally magnetic personality, a thick, gorgeous reddish-gold double coat, moderate bone, nice chest, excellent head, and at nearly 8 years old, still runs with a 4-dog Alaskan Husky team.

Both have 'Normal' eyes and Kyra and Oscar have OFA 'Good' and OFA 'Fair' hips respectively. Neither has a history of seizures or food allergies. Genetic diversity is extremely important to the long-term health of the Chinook breed. As with all of our litters, dam and sire were chosen to maximize genetic diversity of the resulting puppies. Both have been DNA tested through Genoscoper to aid in maximizing diversity and preventing known health concerns in future generations.

Kyra is sweet, smart, and loves people (ANY people will do- although she has her favorites). She is well-socialized with other dogs, cats, ferrets, and children of all sizes. She has turned out to be a great mother, but we're sure she is excited to have the pups' big sister Zazu around to help wear those little ones out. She is a typical Chinook in many ways, especially being lazy when her owners are lazy, and being active when her owners are active. She recently took Reserve Champion at the Chinook National Specialty as well as the recipient of the chesterh Sweetie Award for being the sweetest Chinook! Kyra has been said to have the perfect blend of sweetness and good training and has been a true Chinook dog Ambassador, meeting many people interested in learning about the joy that is the Chinook. NOTE: Put your face near Kyra's and prepare to get a tongue bath (she loves to lick).

Oscar (Channahon’s Kikiah Tyee) is a well-muscled athletic Chinook that excels both in the ring and sled racing. He holds the Chinook Owners Association – Working Dog Excellence title as a member of a 4-dog Alaskan Husky team. Oscar is very vocal and animated at the start of any race and puts his head down an off he goes. In the show ring he holds Championship titles in both UKC and AKC, and has showed at Westminster in the past. Oscar holds a V-1 rating under International All Breed Canine Association (IABCA).

Oscar’s been his owner's special Heart Dog the minute she heard Moody (Oscar's grandfather) give a howl in the middle of the night, followed by Oscar letting out one big howl at O’Hare (I knew this would be a love affair). Five years ago she retired, but Oscar faithfully lets out a howl at 5:30am when the alarm rings and she's not up. Oscar is a confident, focused, happy creature that always wants to please. He’s currently learning Barn Hunting and loves finding the rats and zooming in the tunnels. Check out a short video of Oscar racing here.

Week 1

Week 1 - 6/12/2016

It's Week 1! Our little Chicken Nuggets seem to be growing so fast! It seems like every morning I come out and look at them and they look so much bigger than the night before. They used to look like little seal pups, now their muzzles are starting to be more distinct and turn them into little puppies. This week has brought a couple of puppy firsts. One is they learned to poop on their own without their mothers help (um yay?). The second is more exciting though. They are starting to use their little legs to move themselves around the whelping box! They look like a bunch of wobbly drunk puppies. :) We captured one video for this week but hope to get a couple more as they "discover" their legs do more than they thought. Although this is a fun milestone, it also means they'll be mobile soon and then the trouble starts!

It seems the Chicken Nugget dipping sauce names are a hit! They're fun and silly and a game people can play to figure out what their full sauce names are from their nicknames. Nacho is one that people have talked about the most. Not sure if it's because he's so darn adorable, or if it's because his name is the silliest! The other day a friend was asking about BB. They are a huge Star Wars lover and asked if we call her BB8 and what order was she born it because if it was 8th that would be too cool. Well turns out she is the 8th born! So BB has another nickname for you Star Wars fans: BB8!

Next up will be their eyes and ears opening so this upcoming week will be a ton of fun! Their eyes are already starting to crack open so I'm sure it won't be too long before these pups start to take in their new world!

It's so exciting watching them discover all of the new things and how they react to them all. They are already starting to "play" with each other, if gnawing on your sibling's paw is considered playing ;), and that will just intensify once they realize those lumps in their den are actually other puppies to play with! This will be a great week to keep tabs on the Puppy Cam!
