Week 2 - 6/18/2022

Week two saw pups nearly triple in size, and momma dog eating historic amounts of food (she eats an entire week's amount of food per day). Tuli continues being a patient, loving and attentive mom, and now completely relaxes and enjoys the break when her human helpers step in to cuddle her pups (previously she wouldn't relax until all the pups were back in her whelping box). She takes "personal time" breaks by hiding under the bed with the cat on occasion, but is never far away when a puppy squeaks.

Eyes and ears are officially open, and they are learning to navigate a larger whelping box (now 2x bigger!) in dimmed light while their eyes develop. A bonus of the opened eyes, all of the pups are much more comfortable and relaxed being held on their backs (rather than being blindly lifted up by the "Big Scary Unknown Hand Things"). Pups are learning to appreciate the sweet sounds of thunder, vacuuming, and farm noises. Tuli has quite a reaction to the farm sounds, so it remains to be scene if this will translate to the pups also getting excited over barnyard sounds in the future.

Pups have interactive wobbly textures to traipse over, including a small San Diego boogie board (if we can, we'll make them all Southern California surfers before they leave for their homes!). Pups were also introduced to new people this week, with carefully monitored introductions with young kids and new smells from new (carefully washed) hands. Firsts:

  • Magic is clearly the intrepid adventurer of the group, and was the first pup to set quite a number of firsts: first to give a recognizable bark-woof (Day 8): Magic!
  • First to give a scratch to her face with a hind leg (Day 9): Magic!
  • First to take the first (very wobbly) steps (Day 10): Magic!
  • First to wrestle with mom's legs and interact playfully with mom just for fun (Day 13): ... once again, Magic!
  • Right at the two week mark, almost overnight, all pups began walking, can sit, and have started interacting with one another playfully. Eyes are now nearly fully open for all pups, and it's amazing to watch them interact with the world.

Parker slowly introduced a shallow dish of goatmilk, and "Sugar&Spice" (Spice) and "Dill Pickle" (Pickle) were immediately all in and drank with gusto. The rest will follow soon, we're sure, but as long as Momma's milk bar is open we suspect the pups will continue to prefer sitting at the milk bar to navigating milk in a dish.

Now that eyes are open, Parker gave pups their first tiny introduction to bathtime in a small warm tub, which received no complaints! They didn't inherit any enjoyment of water from momma, so we're working on getting them used to bathtime now for their future homes.

Stay tuned for: puppy playtime in a ball pit, more puppy surfing, and new sights and sounds!
