Week 2 - 11/5/2023

Week 2 for the Mythical Creatures Litter has had some big milestones. Most of the pups' eyes have opened either fully or partially except for two. Siren (pink) was one of the first with her eyes open and she started exploring when she was out of the pen during the cleaning time. No fear for this little lady. The pups are placed on a blanket outside the whelping pen to allow us time to change the pads. Occasionally they have ventured off the blanket onto the tile floor and have not showed any fear regarding this new surface. The others are showing signs of curiosity about this new world they can now see and have even started playing with toys. All the pups are stronger and walking better if still wobbly. Adaro and Griffin both have very calm personalities and remain very calm during the neuro stimulation exercises. Pixie remains to be one of the most vocal about getting to the milk bar and wanting momma’s attention. Gnome (blue) is by far the largest pup currently. He was 3# on day 12! But all the pups have gained weight daily and are doing very well.

The pups are still doing the neuro stimulation exercises that are designed to stimulate their brains so they will grow to be well adjusted pups. The light stressors that are introduced to the pups help them in learning and overcome fear to try new things and become little explorers such as Pixie has already demonstrated this week. On day 17 and until they go home, we will move from the neuro stimulation exercises to introducing the pups to new sights, sounds and textures.

Keelie remains a calm momma and feeds the pups pretty much on a schedule now and spends an hour or so outside of the whelping pen at a time but is diligent in keeping the whelping box clean. Keelie has been up to going on her regular two walks each day. Aunt Myka tried a couple of times this last week to get the pups to play. LOL it will be fun when they can start attacking her playfully. Otherwise, Myka pretty much stays out of Keelie’s way.

During week two we will see all eyes fully open along with their ears. The pups will become more stable in walking around the pen and will start playing with each other and the soft toys. They will become more adventurous and will attempt to crawl out of the whelping pen, so we will have to put up the door to the pen sometime this week. They will also start to stay awake for longer periods.

This will be a fun week for you to watch the puppy cam and we will see you at next week's pupdate. Until then, keep watching that puppy cam and hanging out with us on Facebook!
