Successful breeding confirmed! In late April of 2014 we will have pups from CH ‘PR’ MountainThunder Great Kyraina DNA-VIP (Kyra) and Aspencreek’s Pal’s Bro (Bro). The three of us (Kristy, Jon, & Kyra) took a road trip up to Northern California to visit family for Thanksgiving and Kyra was lucky to get to meet three west coast bachelor Chinooks on her way up! She got to hang out and play with all of them and each had something special she liked, but Bro was the handsome guy she liked most and we all decided he’d be ‘the one’ for this breeding. :)

When Bro first met Kyra he was super-excited and did his deep roo-bark to get her attention. When she played ‘hard to get’ he then danced excitedly around the backyard. Kyra whined in excitement, not knowing what to do until she joined in the Chinook dance and then play-chase around the backyard. They had a great time together and Bro was surprisingly spritely for an 8-year-old (he was pretty good too before we brought Kyra to meet him so it wasn’t just her getting him moving).

Kyra (52 pounds, 22 inches) and Bro (75 pounds, 25 inches) should make some great pups. In many ways, Bro is an ideal Chinook male. Bro has a mask, perfect size, nice bone, a square head with a good dome, and great rear angulation. Kyra’s of course has a gorgeous Tawny coat, nice head, great front angulation and a personality that makes stud dogs and people alike weak at the knees. These future lovers have CERF normal eyes and OFA good (Kyra) and OFA fair (Bro) hips. Neither has a history of seizures or food allergies. This pairing will again (like our last litter) be a cross of East and West Chinook lines to bring together unique genes.

Kyra is sweet, smart, and loves people (ANY people will do- although she has her favorites). She is well-socialized with other dogs, cats, ferrets, and children of all sizes. She had an exceptionally easy whelping (birthing of pups) the last time around and is a great mother (especially once the pups get big enough to play with!). She is a typical Chinook in many ways, especially being lazy when her owners are lazy, and being active when her owners are active. She recently gained her Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Champion titles. Kyra has been said to have the perfect blend of sweetness and good training and has been a true Chinook dog Ambassador, meeting many people interested in learning about the joy that is the Chinook. NOTE: Put your face near Kyra's and prepare to get a tongue bath (she loves to lick).

Bro will give you a big ole Chinook kiss or ‘roo’ every time you ask (and sometimes when you don’t ask!). He is a smart and friendly dog that enjoys lots of petting, love and attention. He starts out each night with lots of kisses and snuggles in bed with his people, but then moves to his place at the foot of the bed until morning. He makes sure he gives more kisses in the morning before and after breakfast, and kisses before and after his walk, and kisses before and after… well any time you are paying attention to him. :) Bro has a very outgoing personality and is generally open and friendly to strangers. His amber eyes, intelligence, and stunning good looks often stop people on the street. Bro’s father is none other than Aspencreek’s Jackson Tyee, the official Chinook representative for the state dog of New Hampshire (click here for picture). Jackson recently passed at 13 years and Bro’s mom, Tali, is 11 and has been one of the healthiest dogs her people have had. Bro and his littermates are 8 ½ and to date have excellent health.

Introducing the Lion King litter! We originally started out thinking to go with a Disney sidekick theme from several movies but we couldn't find the adorable little toys to go with the names. We stumbled upon Lion King toys and thought it would be fun to do that theme since all the characters were animals with some pretty cool names. Thus the Lion King litter came to be!

Jon guessed Kyra was to have her pups on April 29th, the Repro Vet said she'd have them on April 30th, so naturally Kyra waited to have them on May 1st! She sure took her time to begin the whelping process so we were all quite anxious to get things started. My mom, Janice, and Jon's nephew, Zach (age 11), were our 'midwives' this time around. Kyra delivered the first five pups in a decent amount of time, although not as quickly as her last litter. Simba had such a huge head I sure felt bad for Kyra that this was the first pup of the night! At least the rest were more reasonable sizes. ;)

Kyra seemed to settle down and nurse her pups but we knew we had at least two more in there so we called our Repro Vet to see if we should come in. Since her contractions sort of stopped, he gave her some calcium and a shot of oxytocin to get things moving along. Jon and I holed up in one of their waiting rooms to help Kyra deliver the last two pups. We luckily thought ahead and brought all of our supplies with us just in case we had to do some deliveries en route or at the vet. Once the last two pups came they were only 10 minutes apart! So we were quite busy, but quite happy that she could still deliver them naturally and that both the pups were in great health!

Kyra is such a top notch mom from the get go this time around! Her last litter she had a fever and wasn't up for much the first few days, but this time she's doing such a great job and we are so proud of her! I guess it is easier for the "second child" (and for dogs that makes it the "second litter"). We are a tad jealous that each time we try to hold one of the pups, Kyra gives us the "stink eye" to give her pup back to her and if we don't comply she'll whine at us. We told her for now we'll oblige, but soon we'll get greedy and want to hold and cuddle the pups for ourselves! :)
