Lion King Litter: Spring 2014
Week 3 - 5/25/2014
Week 3 already, where has the time gone!? It just flew by and maybe that’s because the puppies are acting more like real dogs and are running around keeping us busy! These little guys are pretty mobile, well when they are awake, and can take off in that one second you are not watching. Although they are adventurous, they do require you to help them when they stray too far and are “lost”. :) We are seeing a lot more play fighting with these guys and they are trying out their new teeth on each other. Once these teeth are fully emerged I’m sure the toys will get more use then since their siblings will no longer want to be the practice grounds for chewing.
The puppies have experienced their first goat’s milk snack and mushy puppy kibble meals. This helps Kyra out now that their teeth are coming in and when they do get a snack at her milk bar, it’s usually not for long since they eat pretty quickly now! She gives them shorter feeding periods and is not shy to give them a growl warning to get off when she’s had enough. Just as typical young kids do, the puppies love to play with their food (kibble), and in their food, during mealtimes!
Since the weather has been nice in the mornings we’ve been letting the puppies have breakfast outside in the yard and then hang out on the patio for a few hours. They’ve gotten some visitors, some with young kids, to help socialize them. They’ve been on or eaten on several different surfaces and we’ll continue to introduce them to new ones (the washing machine is EVERYONE’S favorite- NOT!). Now that they can hear, we have been starting to introduce loud noises such as sudden yells, claps, pans banging, vacuuming and thunderstorms. This will continue into next week as well.
Kiara has been having some fun play times with herself (or imaginary friend?) as she hops and barks and wiggles all on her own (check out one of the videos of this week to see her in action). Shenzi is our super lover, always finding her way into your arms for some cuddling. Zazu is our little strategizer, contemplating her surroundings before diving in for play (well she’s gotta find the perfect sibling to pounce on!).
One thing that’s funny with her is you see her sitting there, you look away, when you look back she’s suddenly closer to you but she’s still sitting there, you look away, and when you look back she’s right next to you looking for some love!! How does she do that so sneakily?! Askari is our super player whether it’s with you, his siblings or the toys. He has the highest tail WPM of all the pups (that’s Wags Per Minute). Kovu continues his adventures and Rafiki and Simba are our snugglers. If you thought week 3 was adorable, wait as we unveil week 4 with the puppies! Their antics get cuter, and more mischievous too. Our favorite part of the day is just hanging out watching TV with a puppy in our arms. :)
The Lion King litter (as always in order of appearance):
Name Meaning & Movie Character:Lion (Swahili). Simba is a rowdy, independent little cub who likes to romp and play. When Simba's father dies, it leaves Simba unsure about who he is. Then Rafiki shows Simba his reflection in a pool and the young lion understands that his father's courage and wisdom are a part of him, too.
Name Meaning & Movie Character:Movement (Hebrew). Mufasa's trusted advisor, Zazu is a prim and proper hornbill with a strong sense of personal dignity. Although Zazu's feathers can be easily ruffled, he is dedicated to Mufasa. The honorable hornbill would give his right wing for the lion king and stays with the pride through good and bad times.
Name Meaning & Movie Character:Friend (Swahili). Rafiki, the wise old baboon, is like a tribal medicine man or an ancient shaman. Rafiki travels his own road, sings his own songs and knows what he knows. After anointing newborn Simba, Rafiki wanders off on his mystical way. He returns again to guide Simba back to the path he was meant to follow.
Name Meaning & Movie Character:Savage (Swahili). Always on the lookout for their next meal or an innocent victim to taunt, tease or terrorize, Banzai, the male hyena, and Shenzi, the female, talk and joke while Ed, the third troublemaker, only laughs. When they're not arguing, these three punks can be found doing Scar's dirty work-- which is no laughing matter.
Name Meaning & Movie Character:Soldier (Swahili). As Mufasa's brother, Scar was next in line for the throne until Simba's birth, and he is obsessed with the need to possess it. Although Scar hides his plot with concern for Simba's safety, this evil, cunning betrayer is really Simba's and Mufasa's enemy-- a fact which the great-hearted Mufasa realizes too late.
Name Meaning & Movie Character:Small, dark thing (Swahili). Kiara is the daughter of Simba and Nala and the main character of The Lion King ll: Simba's Pride. She is portrayed as the feisty, playful, and adventurous princess of Pride Rock, but her over-protective father, Simba, easily fears for her safety and employs the assistance of Timon and Pumbaa in watching over her during her explorations in secret.
Name Meaning & Movie Character:Scar (Swahili). Kovu is Zira's youngest son, Scar's adoptive son and chosen heir. As a cub, Kovu lives a rough life in the barren Outlands in Zira's pride of exiles loyal to Scar. After his older brother Nuka leaves him alone, Kovu meets Kiara and brags about his independence, impressing her. As young adults Kovu and Kiara return to Pride Rock and break up a battle, and Kovu stands up to his mother, swearing to protect Kiara and Simba. Simba admits that he was wrong about Kovu and allows him to join the pride as Kiara's mate and his son-in-law and future king.
