Week 1

Week 1 - 5/11/2014

Week 1 flew by so fast already! We are now back in the swing of things on a normal puppy schedule and getting lots of puppy snuggles. They are all gaining weight nicely, with five of them reaching the 2 pound mark yesterday. Pups are in the midst of their neurological stimulation exercies that are designed to stress the puppy out just a little bit to help them gain tolerance and adaptability as they grow. These exercises consist of tickling each pup between the toes with a q-tip, holding them in 3 different positions (ex. on their back for five seconds), and then putting them on a cool, damp towel. Some still do their complaining while being held upside down, but most have learned to not resist and sail through the exercises.

Boy oh boy is this litter a noisy bunch! Oh there's the normal puppy squeals that either mean "I'm hungry but can't find mom" or "My path is blocked by this large lump in the way" (which is Kyra) and the normal puppy grunts of huffing and puffing when you pick them up and they don't know what's going on (which are funny every time!). These little guys have introduced us to the random but loud "MAROOOO!" while they are sleeping and the R2-D2 sound of "WRRRRR!" in addition to tiny little puppy barks, roos, and growls! :) It's noisy, but when the MAROOOO! just pops out during the day we all have to stop and laugh! :)

Some of the pups are starting to do some wobbly walking already. Simba and Shenzi seem to be the ones that started walking first, at least when there aren't so many puppy hills (pups that have tunneled under the fleece) in the way! Coming up in week 2 there will be steadier walking, eyes will open, and pups will explore their world from an entirely new view. Then the real puppy trouble starts!
