Week 1 - 10/29/2023
This first week has flown by. Keelie and the pups are doing wonderfully well. All pups were great sucklers from the start and thus have all grown very well. Three of the pups are already over two pounds. Keelie is a very protective mom and did not like having the pups taken out of the whelping box for the first few days. She now will leave the pups after feeding so she can get some well-deserved uninterrupted sleep.
Daily routine includes cleaning, feeding momma, neural stimulation exercises for the pups (days 3-16), twice daily weights (week one and then daily for week two) and trimming of the nails as needed. Of course, daily snuggles are a must to help socialize these little ones. It is a difficult job, but someone needs to do it. Around day three Keelie decided she could resume a daily walk of about ¾ of a mile, she has a bounce in her step as she enjoys the outdoors and visiting the neighborhood dog smells. Interestingly she never dug in the dirt during her pregnancy but now has a pretty large crater going on in the back yard.
The pups had their first outing this week on Wednesday to the vet for the pups. All traveled well and momma was great. The pups are getting around the whelping pen and are vocal about when they need momma’s attention. Pixie, who is the smallest, makes sure that she makes her way into the milk bar and can easily push aside her litter mates.
Their eyes and ears should be opening in a few days and there is no telling how their activities will change as they start to push themselves up on all four legs. We have noticed how the colors on many of the puppies have begun to change to a tawnier color and the tan color is starting to show more on the two black and tan males.
As a side note: Keelie’s name is also from a mythical creature based upon a massive wyvern in the Throne of Glass book series. The character, Keelie, exhibited deep loyalty to her rider, Petrah, and loved her so much that she is willing sacrificed herself to save her rider. She also manifested compassion, as she appeared to attempt to be friendly with other dragons. Our Keelie very much lives up to her namesake as she is very loyal and loving to her family, protective and tolerant of small children and very compassionate. She will often wake you up if you are having a nightmare and cuddle with you until all is well.
We'll see you at next week's pupdate. Until then, keep watching that puppy cam and hanging out with us on Instagram and Facebook!
