Introducing the Sun God litter! We decided to go with Sun Gods from various religions or mythology as our first puppy litter theme. This is appropriate in a variety of ways: Kyra's name means 'of the Sun', we all live in the 'Valley of the Sun' (the nickname for the Phoenix area), and Desert Sol Chinooks was named for the blazing sun that shines in Arizona just about every day!
Jon had puppy watch duties while Kristy and Penthea slept. At 4:25am Jon came and woke us up to start the whelping process. Our first male, Apollo, was born and the training Pen gave us went into action! The excitement continued pup after pup as the first 6 were born in less than an hour and half! We barely had time to record and clean the one pup before the next was coming. Jon felt around Kyra's belly and said he felt a seventh so we all relaxed a bit while we waited. Kyra got a nap in and the rest of us picked out the names and put some breakfast on. Just after breakfast cinnamon rolls were frosted puppy #7 came (of course, perfect timing so our rolls would be cold when we ate them) an hour later. Thinking we were finished we ate breakfast and Pen went in the other room to start the day with a phone call.
Kyra just seemed to be a little agitated and off for a while and Kristy swore she wasn't done due to her heavy breathing. A little while later as Kristy noted a 'weird look' on Kyra's face, she discovered that Kyra was in fact delivering an 8th puppy!!! Jon sprang into action and delivered the last pup with ease.
Can you believe there were 8 in there! The x-ray only showed 6 so we sure were surprised! Pen came back into the room after her call and did a triple take when she counted 8 puppies! It was a whirlwind of a morning but it was also fun. Overall the process was quick and easy, it only took 4 and a half hours to deliver the 8 pups. Kyra was a champ and the help Pen provided was invaluable! We have a healthy litter of 3 males and 5 females.
So now, the moment you've all been waiting for, we would like to introduce the puppies of the Sun God litter, in order of appearance:
