Week 2 - 6/20/2024

Week 2 is an eventful week. We were pretty focused on Greta and the little ones 24/7 the first half of the week. Making sure pups were gaining weight and trying to keep Artemis on a full teat when she was feeding, which when the other pups are twice her size meant a little hockey checking around Artemis. Luna and Andromeda too we kept an eye on. We might be a little hyperfocused...but in the end it is great for the pups.

We are super observant of Greta too. She didn’t look very good on Monday and was less enthusiastic about food and her walking was weird, but it was hard to tell when you have utters. We took her temperature and watched it go up and by Tuesday we thought we should take her to the vet. Good we did because she had a common infection in her uterus and needed some antibiotics. Dr. Stell was great and answered all my librarian questions. The pups and Greta are on probiotics too and by Tuesday night Greta was already eating and feeling better.

The pups were excellent the whole time and we got the bottle feeding started while she was at the vet, since that took several hours. The Miracle Nipple was an excellent purchase and does the job. I think we are a little less stressed now that we can feed the pups if they need a little extra. They are getting big and need a lot of milk these days. Mid-week we tried a little milk lapping with the pups. Artemis was amazing at it. The rest that tried made a huge mess. So not ready yet, but soon! Everyone is peeing and pooping on their own, with an occasional need of a belly rub when they are full. But the best part of eyes open and walking pups is it is time for lots and lots of cuddles! It is exceptional to cuddle and they don’t have any teeth yet for play gnawing. We have finally picked out some stuffies to use in the photo shoot this weekend so we can see better how they grow. It is wild how quickly they double in size.

The last couple weeks we've been following Puppy Culture ENS (early neurological stimulation) which includes holding the pups in different positions, putting them on cool surfaces, and tickling their toes with Q-tips. As we come to the end of the 2nd week, the pups are starting to play together and are a chorus of yipping when their Mama Greta comes near them. Not quite hearing yet! They'll soon be showered with new toys to challenge their growing brains and placed on different surfaces each day to continue these early gentle stressors that help make them more resilient dogs.
