Week 8 - 4/16/2022

Week 8 was an exciting time. Not only was this the week the puppies left for their forever home, but they grew at an amazing rate. Each puppy grew at least 2 pounds, they got taller, they got longer, and they became more confident. The biggest change was their need for more space. Even though their puppy pen was large, they needed more space. After waking up from a long sleep the puppies would eat and then demand to be released. Having the run of the most of the first floor was good, but going outside was much, much better. Unfortunately, the beginning of week 8 saw lots of rain and a muddy back yard. This led to the funniest events of the week (at least from an outside observer’s view) and what we call the ‘jail break’.

The puppies would, upon hearing the back door open, dash from wherever they were at full speed to the back door. This happened every time we let the big dogs out to go to the bathroom. If the big dogs were fast the puppies couldn’t get out, but when the big dogs decided to stop half in and half out of the doorway, a single person couldn’t stop all eight puppies. This happened more than once in week 8 and always resulted in 4 to 5 muddy dogs. We miss our puppies so much, but we are happy they are now in such wonderful homes.

A super huge THANK YOU to Pam and Mark for slaying the raising of 8 puppies on their first litter! They did an excellent job socializing these pups which are such wonderful, smart and sweet companions to their families! Good luck to them as they start their own kennel Tennessee River Chinooks!

The Music City litter (as always in order of appearance):

Desert Sol Cole Illahee (formerly known as Garth)

Name Origin/Destination:

Coulee has some great name origins! Pronounced “K-oolie”, he was named to give homage to his parents, Myka and Ooli. His full name “Cole Illahee” was chosen because it translates to “cold earth” or “winter” from Chinook Jargon. This historic trade language created in the Pacific Northwest combined many Salish, English and French words that can still be found used every day across many areas of Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. Winter is also his mom and dad’s favorite season as they are out in the snow as much as possible! Also, Washington State was created with fascinating stories of fire and ice. Millions of years ago, volcanic lava flows flooded the Columbia Basin, creating basalt columns thousands of feet thick that then later would be carved out by glaciers creating 150 different “coulees” across the state. We’re so happy to finally have Coulee’s mom and dad as part of our Desert Sol pack as they kept in touch over the years to get a puppy. Coulee will be so loved and go on many adventures outdoors up in WA and chill and play with his two kitty siblings at home.

Desert Sol Keeper of the Stars (formerly known as Cash)

Name Origin/Destination:

Renji also has several great name origins. Renji’s family has a tradition of naming their pets after anime characters. Renji is from the “Bleach” series and means “next love” in Japanese. “Keeper of the Stars” by Tracy Byrd was his mom’s wedding song when she and her husband got married. They felt that something bigger than them put them together for a reason. They had a connection, even while young, that nobody could break. He passed away shortly after their 24th anniversary. Renji’s mom feels like her husband is up there keeping her stars aligned so that her dream of training, showing and eventually breeding her own dogs could come true. So Renji will also be his mom’s “Keeper of the Stars” as he guides her and is loved as they do fun stuff together around town, with her two grown boys and going to dog shows together in FL!

Desert Sol Machiavellia (formerly known as Reba)

Name Origin/Destination:

Mackey is headed to IL to live with her family. They had Chinooks in the past and couldn’t be without one and was very happy to add Mackey to their home! Mom, dad and both daughters have graduated or will attend Purdue University which contains Mackey Arena for the Boilermaker Basketball games, so they decided to name her Mackey! It also sounds a lot like her kennel name “Reba McEntire” so it also tied in nicely with her early puppy days. They also wanted to pay homage to a sled dog's roots, by giving her a name that is a strong leadership or royal name fit for a future Iditarod champion, so Machiavelli was chosen (and updated to a female version to Machiavellia). This smart and loveable pup loves all people and dogs and is perfecting the Chinook tongue and the weird Chinook sleeping position where they look broken while on their backs and feet in the air!

Desert Sol Zephyrus Will (formerly known as Willie)

Name Origin/Destination:

Zephyrus (pronounced zeh·fr·uhs) is the Greek God of the West Wind and the Messenger of Spring. Zephyrus, the gentlest of the four winds, and was the brother of the god of the North Wind, Boreas. Zeph will be living with a Samoyed, called Boo, who is registered as Sterling’s Breeze of Boreas, so a nice tie in with both of the dogs names. Zeph’s family wanted to honor his Music City Litter name (Willie) and believe he “WILL” do great things in his life with them. Zephyrus will be heading to OH to live with his vet mom (which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the point of view!), his dad, and his 13 human brother… and of course Boo!

Desert Sol Kaia (formerly known as Jo Dee)

Name Origin/Destination:

While Kaia’s new dad was growing up, his mother was getting her PhD in Anthropology, and in fact did her field work living on the Passamaquoddy reservation in Maine on and off for close to a year. So, he was raised with a keen interest in all things American Indian both east and west! In fact, he decided to major in Anthropology in college as well. So, he and his wife have mostly looked for American Indian names for our dogs. “Micco”, their former Chinook, means “chief" in Seminole! For their new Chinook pup, they looked at many American Indian girl’s names, and settled on Kaia, because it means “Willow Tree” in the Navajo language, and they thought it was very pretty! And there are plenty of willow trees in MA where she is heading. Kaia will be having fun with her dad, who does American Revolution reenactments, and her mom, and they all will hike, go on adventures, and enjoy life together. She also has a kitty brother, Nibbler, that they all hope become fast friends!

Desert Sol Galway Girl (formerly known as Dolly)

Name Origin/Destination:

Quinn will be going home with Mary and Brendan, who own two Chinooks, Sammie and Bella. Sammie is Myka’s dad, so Quinn gets to live with her grandpa! Her full name “Galway Girl”, was chosen in honor of Mary’s mother, whom they lost this last year. Born in Ireland, she was highly involved in the Irish community in Chicago throughout her life and as vibrant a personality as you could ever see. They will use the call name, “Quinn” which, while originally a boy’s name, has become far more popular as a girl’s name in modern times. It is originally of Irish/Scottish descent and means both “wisdom” and “intelligence” - strong characteristics of the Chinook breed! They also love that, in Latin, the name Quinn means, “a girl who is as pretty as two” - which is certainly how they feel about her! Quinn will be heading to IL to live with her new family.

Desert Sol Popsicle (formerly known as Wynona)

Name Origin/Destination:

There is some humor in the origin of Poppy’s full name “Popsicle”. Her new mom’s 4-year-old grandson has held steady on the name for almost a year now when he heard his grandma was getting a new puppy. Since it was summer time, he liked the name Popsicle! Her new family will call her Poppy, which acknowledges the poppy flowers that grow in her California home. Poppy will go on long walks on the beach with mom, hang out with her mom’s grandchildren, and play with her kitty Pitypat.

Desert Sol Atalanta (formerly known as Shania)

Name Origin/Destination:

Atalanta was a heroine from Greek mythology who was known for being the fastest person on earth. She was a skilled hunter, a member of the Argonauts, and even beat the father of Achilles in a wrestling match. Much of her myth revolves around physical accomplishments out in the wild, so she'll have a chance to live up to her name out in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Attie will go on lots of nature walks with her new dad, long hikes or backpacking on the weekends, visiting the farmers market and hanging out with friends at breweries with dad. She also gets to play with her kitty sibling, Newt.
